Hi Mike, To check the contents of a field, use a closeField handler. That message is sent when the user moves out of a field control in any way so you can get the contents, check them, then put up an error message if there's a problem.
I'm afraid I don't have an answer for you on the password issue but I'm sure someone else will jump in.
