Sorry, poor proof-reading. Penultimate sentence should have read... Unfortunately, whilst a 'Bundle bit' can be set in the file's properties, it doesn't seem to override these application-level bundle/package flags to unlock a single file and I wouldn't trust my Terminal skills to even attempt to go hacking into the Launch.Services database (or rebuild it after hacking the associated plists).
