I used to fully publish books in Word. Works better than desktop publishing, if 
you are happy with their footnote options and a few other restrictions, but 
their footnoting is as good or better than any other desktop publishing app I 
have worked with. It gets dicey with images though. You can run out of memory 
pretty quickly if you have a lot of images in EPS format. At least, that was 
true some years back. They may have addressed it by now.
