No, a backScript didn't do the trick.  I brought up the message
watcher and unless the mouse is within the modal dialog, no message
is sent – to anything!  I don't think there is a way to scroll a
stack when a modal dialog is open.  Bummer.

Technically, a modal is blocking. It's supposed to be, which is why it's considered intrusive and should only be used when no other action can occur until a condition is met. Is there a reason not to use a palette or another window type? Maybe there's a different way around the problem.
