I'm no regex expert, but I think what this is saying is:

  filter the list, including only strings that end with a dot followed by 1st 
character in [GJP], 2nd character in [IPN], last character in [FG].

Clever indeed.

It will also catch ".JIF". We hope no one has files with extension "PIG". ".GIG" is optional.
