Okay, so now I'm talking off the top of my head with little experience but...

I remember reading something about Apple's sandboxing rules, which say that apps can only access files outside the sandbox if the user specifically selects them, which is what happens when you use "answer file". If an app tries to access a file outside its sandbox without user interaction, permission is denied.

Could that be related?
