Shapeways prints are surprisingly good. I have visited with them previously at SIGGRAPH, where they showed off prints using different materials and metals. You do need to model very carefully and specifically for 3d printing. Remember how you were warned not to mix up color formats and image resolutions before sending something to a professional printer - or you will end up with a major surprise? Same thing or worse with 3D printing.
