What steps are you taking? In general, if a background is on multiple cards (they don't have to be) and you make a change to it, it will still be on the other cards, and the change will be displayed. The exception is if you ungroup a background, make changes to it, and only regroup it after going to (and returning from) another card. Here is a reference to the section of the documentation that covers groups and backgrounds in detail.
