how to share cards between substacks?

I have a few cards which I need to reuse in several substacks. I could put the cards in the mainstack, or their own substack. How can I programmatically do something like this?

insert card "the card" of stack "sharedCards" into this stack
set the script of card "the card" to "..."

What's the best way to approach this? groups? templateCard? copy/paste?
