Good morning.  The Ajax code in gmail causes a failover to https to
http.  You can see it if you read the javascript in the login.

A good way to ensure that you always use https is to 1) use Firefox
and 2) Download the CustomizeGoogle plugin.  In the preferences for
the plugin you can specify that the various google services always use
https instead of http, including gmail.  This will ensure that your
connection is always encrypted.

Unfortunately there is no such plugin for Safari.
