You don't need to. Just include the appropriate text-encode tag before the text so unlauts etc will be interpreted correctly.

Yes, thank you, I know this from the 2.1 vcard format, but lazy moi wanted to avoid this extra typing ;-)
Dave's solution is exactly what I need and works fine on windows, too.

Otherwise the spec says the parser should default to ascii-safe.
