Windows registry and being a "proper" app

Okay, I've not really ever done any development for Windows-resident apps, so forgive my ignorance on this one.

Is there anything I need to do to make my application "proper" as far as Microsoft is concerned? Specifically, is there something I need to do in order to get it checked into the registry, etc.?

What's different on XP in this regard?
