The stack file format changed in 2.7. That shouldn't cause the engine to crash the engine (but who knows, I can make it crash doing very simple things that shouldn't crash it). Is it possible that you can open the stack in a version of Rev that is pre-2.7? If that works, then it looks like that may be the cause of the problem.
