Thanks, Richard, don't know how you find the time to know all this stuff! I am pondering it all. Meanwhile I think I can construct my app more or less the way I want it for both Mac and Windows, provided I simply forget about the possibility of multiple instances - and hoping the kids never find out!
In fact I can see a real problem with multiple instances, which is where an app not designed to cope with such an issue relies on keeping open for writing, a file which has been created for its exclusive use. This means that the second instance would simply fail, as the 'special' file would already be open when the second instantiation took place... however, for me this remains a theoretical possibility at present.
