Have you tried looking inside the app bundle to see if something is missing?
Right click on the icon, then choose "Show package contents"
It could be that the destination file system does not think the user has
enough permissions to write all the files, or it stops copying files for
some reason.

Thanks Jim, Sarah,

I haven't had a chance to look at this myself yet - but apparently it's the 'core' file inside the packaage (in the MacOS folder) that changes size. The only thing I write is the preferences file, so it could be that, though IIRC I use the specialfolder function to get that. And more to the point, this is an app that is built on the Mac and is known working on the Mac, but has displayed this behaviour after being copied back from a CD (that was burnt on a Mac).

But the truth is I haven't had first-hand experience yet; and I jumped to the conclusion that there might be something in the app copied back from CD that echoed an app built on PC and copied (somehow) to Mac. However since posting Mark mailed me offlist and explained the preferences issue - so I probably jumped to the wrong conclusion. I should find out more when I'm back in the office on Monday, and will let the list know if I learn anything useful!

thanks for your time,

- Ben
