Now exporting odd-shaped button images as GIFs: this has solved the problem (well, at least on my G4 MAC) with white areas where there should be transparency. The resizing works as well.
The metal textures come out as GIFs with a rather unattractive Moire effect. Working on replacing this with a colour-choosing system.
