Yes, setting customproperties is very fast, and putting text into a field is a lot slower (about a 1000 times slower than getting the text). For the application of using stored MIDI data for playback, you would only have done the put once when making the stack, and even though it's slow, putting 7k of text takes under 5 milliseconds, so not a serious drain on your production time.
