A message providing notification of a single property is a subset of the
one I'd suggested:
getProp and setProp for built-in properties

It may be simpler to implement a special case for just the text
property, but there are a good many other properties I wouldn't mind
being able to overload if we could.
Also, I just submitted a request to address the core issue here, saving
the time needed to create a custom scrollbar from scratch by allowing us
to set the colors and lookAndFeel of scrollbars and other controls:

Here's an example of the sort of thing we can do today using emulated
