Here are the cross-platform fonts I tend to use:

Arial
Courier, Courier New
Times New Roman
Verdana

These give you serif, sans-serif & mono-spaced. I am sure there are
more, but I can't think of them off the top of my head.
However the advice the others are giving is still very important even
when using cross-platform fonts, as they do display at different sizes
on the different systems.
