Yes, using words is not a general approach. I was referring here to the case presented by the original poster which apparently operated on words with his content. I dare say that there is no really general approach that works always. Content massaging needs to be tailored for any given situation.

For example, for content that is already html or xml, it is often (but not always) handy to set the item delimiter to < and work with items.
