I second that. In particular, look in File|Open at the Network tab and
Advanced Options: select Stream/Save and adjust the Settings... button
options to output to a file. VLC will play both local and streaming
mp3 files and can save them to files with no problem. Remember to turn
off the output setting when you're done or you'll be saving all your
VLC stuff to file.
