I've been using the sqlite driver since it was an altuit product. There were a few teething problems in the early versions but nothing major for years. I don't know about linux issues though. As long as people aren't jumping backwards and forwards into different ide's with your plugin trying to access the one file then I don't think you will have much trouble.
