I read recently that default OS X installs have firewall turned off, but the network ports are sewn up tight and practically no open ports.


Also you can clear all the ipfw rules using the System prefs | Sharing | Filewall

I doubt if this is the issue, but it is always something to check when you are troubleshooting network problems.
