How are you thinking of the data tree representation?
I have a library called boxes that has been stagnating at "almost" for half a year; it can handle a tree. An enhancement on bugzilla is nested arrays values. That might be even better. In the mean time, you will need figure out something.
Once you have some notion of how you want to represent that, then the search will fall out.
