You could record a left-balanced and right-balanced version of each
sound file in a sound program and then save them in a format that

Yes, that seems to work. The only restriction is that you need to have
two sound files of each sample, but this seems acceptable.

Sounds like you already have ONE stereo sound for each sample?
Or what do you mean by that?
