Working with parallel adapters

As an exercise, I'm looking to get data from an older SCUBA dive 
computer. The dive computer connects to a my Mac via a parallel port so 
I'm thinking of trying a USB to parallel adapter.

Would I fundamentally treat the adapter like a serial port or is it 
likely to be more complicated than that?
