had some arcane interface where I wanted "-" as a menuPick, why
shouldn't I be able to have it?...and if there is a good reason why I
can't have "-", why should that lock me out of ALL strings beginning
with "-"?

If it is "-09" and other negativities you want to be able to display in menu's,
insert a space before the -09 . No quotes are necessary only if you want them
displayed too.
In the menuPick you can strip the space.
