Thanks for all the suggestions re the above.  I have fixed the problem, 
although I could do with some more XP help (see next  post!).

In short, as far as I can make out, XP home and professional cannot read a 
custom property from an encrypted stack via a preopenstack handler.  Each gives 
a different but equally wrong result.  I had committed to this as a means of 
discouraging piracy - names of authorised users were stored in the encrypted 
stack.

Shifting the script to openstack solved the problem.
