I tried expanded on OS X and all it seemed to do was turn off smoothing. It might be changing the font, too, I'm not sure.
Maybe this is why expanded and condensed are not in the IDE menu.
Here is an (admittedly, somewhat painful) idea: imageSource for kerning wedges
