Do you mean "don't predate the Gregorian calendar"? I think I might be getting my calendars mixed up. I confess to being confused by the term Julian date.
It would be nice to use any date presentation suitable for a selected calendar, even outside the normal range for that calendar and to do date math on those even when not similar. Having a default calendar would be important. Getting warning flags for dates outside of normal ranges might be nice but may not be practical or meaningful.
