font between OS 9 and X

I've heard that using Ariel helps with the look of the font between 
Windows and Mac. My problem is between the PPC and OSX builds. I'm 
using Ariel everywhere, but the font in 9 is of much poorer quality 
than in X. I'm testing in Classic, and the results are not the typical 
mac quality. Clues?
