Thanks for the thought, but I haven't been able to get any information from the mouseControl function which does not apply to the original target stack, rather than the application stack in which the mouse is clicked. :-(
I haven't seen the code so I'm just guessing here, but would it help to add something like:
set the defaultStack to the topStack
