Unreliable button icon alpha

I have some rectangular buttons in my application which have icons that 
include alpha data. Most of the time, these come up and display 
properly, but sometimes, the edges are all choppy... as though the 
alpha is getting translated from 8 bit to one bit. Clicking the button 
clears the problem.

Anyone seen this? Have an idea how to prevent it?
