Two long shots:
1. Perhaps there is an object covering the field. Geoff Canyon's Navigator
plugin is great for finding these. Note, there is a bug in Navigator version
2.5b that doesn't let you actually re-layer the objects (use the previous version
for that) but it will help you find problems like this.
2. Perhaps the color of the text in this field is white (or whatever color
the field is).
