Actually, you're all right. (Although for Andrew's comment should have said
"competitor for SmartDraw and Freehand").

It was originally called "SmartSketch 95" (by Future Wave), which was
originally designed as a graphics program for pen computers. After doing
that, they wanted to make a run at the Windows and Mac market and saw
Illustrator and Freehand already in the space. So they turned it into an
animation product and it was reborn as "FutureSplash Animator". This was
then bought by Macromedia who changed the name to "Flash".
