I would add, that while Hugh's stack is functional, it need a few more features: what is needed is not only identify that a given word does not exist in the main or user dictionary, but... also

a) give the user a list of choices beginning with the same initial letter(s)
b) let him choose one of those and click on one from the choice list
c) allow for the option to enter the word correctly spelled.
c) fix the mis-spelled word in the original text field by clicking "replace all"

I think I could probably get my head around doing this myself using Hugh's stacks as a starting point, but didn't want to go there yet if someone else had already done this.

alternatively we could ask Mac users to get Cassidy and Green excellent "SpellCatcher" but then I don't have control over the user dictionary and don't know of a comparable system wide option like that on Windows machines... So I may have to roll my own chapati here.

I really need a spell check with a user editable dictionary. or a separate User's dictionary. Before I dive into using Hugh Seniors stack, which is dated 1999... I was wondering if anyone had done one more recently.
