An alternative method to solving this problem would be to use array notation (custom property set ?) to read in and store each individual file in the bundle, rather than try to read it as a whole. Bear in mind that this would mean recreating the bundle's internal structure -- directories and all -- when spitting it back out later on.


If you are distributing a standalone for OS X, it might be easier to simply copy the needed bundle into the resources folder of your standalone app bundle, then copy it back out when it needs to be installed.
