You don't need ResEdit for OS X.

There is a tutorial that will be released with 2.5. Mark Wieder put it together. It should make getting started with externals much easier.


Examples for OS X and Linux?

I would take a look at some of the code of existing externals which may be helpful until the tutorial comes out. Here are some links to some that include source code.
