I tried setting the size explicitly and it wants to be 128 in height, not the 82 height I set.

?? Not in my experience - I've always been able to control the size of the drawer by controlling the stack size.
for me also
my script :
set the width of stack "xyz" to "nnn" drawer stack "xyz" at bottom in stack "parenstack"
it works without problem...
