I compress/decompress stacks all the time on Mac and PC w/out problems.
It'll take only slightly longer to download 50 separate files than one large file. I think I would make that design decision based on other criteria than just time.

technically speaking: I have no idea ;-)
But if you display the images immediately after they have been downloaded, then 50 * 10 KB will be definitively subjectively faster...
