The machine() function is certainly a call into the Mac Toolbox, and if that doesn't have an entry for your machine, then it returns "unknown". RunRev can't do any better than that.

but on a Mac (Blue and White G3, running 10.3.7), I get

The platform() function works fine on both machines.

I get "unknown" on 10.3.8 on MMD (dual 1.25GHz G4).

Well, linux hasn't checked in, so I'm just guessing, but it seems
machine() adds new info only on pre-X macs.
