Exactly the behavior I'm seeing. It's fine, just not clear or all that
predictable without study.

2.5. A couple quick tests suggest it's not true now.
1: create new mainStack
2: create new button
3: edit its script:
on mouseUp
set the width of the templateField to 400
set the backgroundColor of the templateField to "green"
create field
end mouseUp
4: check the properties in the message box
But the properties appear to get reset by either dragging the field
tool
from the tools palette or selecting "Field" from the "New Control"
item of
the "Object" menu.
When the IDE learns to speak, its first word might be "Gotcha!"
