And the only thing that would fix up that spurious "variable name shadows another..." error message was declaring my loop variables as locals. I thought it was very strange at the time, and of course, now I can't get myself back into that situation for trying. If I do manage to do it I'll bugzilla the script and then try to fix it. Maybe there's some other mechanism at work.
