what is a hard space?

A "hard space" is ASCII 202 (which on a Mac you can get by typing
Option-Space)

Perhaps it's worth adding that:
Non-breaking space is character 202 in Mac Roman. But it is 160 in Latin-1, Ansi and Unicode.
