Hi Andy,

I want to design a Chinese abacus. I'd like the background not covered by
the beads, rods, reckoning bar and frame to show though.

[snip]

Any hints??

Create an image of the frame, rods, & reckoning bar with the rest of the image transparent.
Group that image with buttons or images for the beads.
Script the group so draggging a bead is contstrained to the axis of the rod, bar, & frame, also moves the beads above/below it appropriatey, and displays a running total.

You should be able to place the group over any background and see the background in the space not occupied by the beads, rods, reckoning bar and frame.
