I don't think it's all that deep. One OS vendor thinks window borders
should be used for resizing, the other thinks they should be used for
moving.
My gripe is that neither will publish the research supporting their
position, leaving both vendors vulnerable to accusations that such
things aren't really research-driven at all, but merely some executive's
edict.
I miss the days when an OS UI researcher had as part of his job
description providing explanations of the "why" behind the "what".

Apple used to do that with Tog, but abandoned the practice some time
before Amelio fired the entire UI research staff in "a cost-cutting
move" (talk about gutting the goose that laid the golden eggs). The
rumor mill says they were replaced by Jobs, but other rumors say they
were replaced with graphic artists, and Apple's so tight-lipped these
days it's not possible to know whether they even do UI research anymore.
Meanwhile, the Office 12 team at Microsoft has been blogging some damn
interesting stuff there at Jensen Harris' site. Thanks, Dan, for
turning me on to that blog.
Sure wish Apple was as proud of its team members as Microsoft is of
theirs. While Microsoft celebrates Harris, Apple appears to conceal
their research staff.
