Indeed. My target audience there was definitely the person who has gotten her/himself into just the conundrum you found yourself facing, not the generic intro-to-rev-programming type. Dan's much better at that part than I could attempt to be, so we can await his explanation. The "it" variable is obvious and intuitive to use until you start to use it, whereupon it becomes confusing, contradictory and transitory.
