Alvaro - you may need to use 'the short system date', rather than just 'the short date' - depending on what your system is. Here in the UK, using a UK-localised mac OS X, the short system date gives dd/mm/yy.

As far as I know, 'the short date' or 'the date' will always use the US convention - mm/dd/yy
