Now that I have time for a more detailed answer, the key lies in how you use
the 'closefield' handler of the text entry field.

It is possible to :
on closefield 
   if me is empty then
       set a flag 'IamEmpty' to true
      set the Submit button to diabled state


---or simpler for the programmer
--less user friendly
on SubmitButton
   if fld textEntry is empty then
      set me to diaabled state
      answer "Nothing to submit"
   else
      do the submit tasks
   end if
