Thanks, Sivakatirswami, the "http://"; URL may be the issue here too. I sent the same tester a copy of the mp3 and a modified text file that points to the same audio, same cue points, but with the audio file local on his machine, in the same place as the text file. The audio then worked fine.

..which leaves the problem of playing audio remotely on XP. Is there another way to do that, besides the almost-but-not-quite-reliable player method?

All I can say it that I can confirm major problems on Windows QT players
where filenames
are set to remote "http://"; URL.s
